Every industry has its own jargon, and when you are working in the media industry it's always handy to know some of their terms to make communicating much easier.


Boilerplate

A boilerplate is a section at the end of a press release that contains all the necessary information about a company.


Dark Social

Dark social refers to the unmeasurable shares that happen through email or direct messages.


Earned Media

Earned media refers to any mentions of your brand in the media that were not paid for.


Embargo

This is when specific information given cannot be shared until a certain date or requirements have been met.


Lag Measures

Lag measures measure the success of objectives that cannot be directly controlled, such as brand awareness and revenue.


Lead Measures

Lead measures track the actions that lead to lag measures and are directly influenced by team efforts, new contracts and campaigns.


Pitch

A pitch is a targeted idea for a story that is sent to journalists, editors, or broadcast networks.
